7 Ways to Lower Your Energy Bills This Summer

Share:

Central Kentucky summers bring heat and humidity — and sky-high energy bills if your home isn't optimized for efficiency. Here are 7 proven ways to keep your cooling costs under control.

1. Upgrade to a programmable or smart thermostat. Set your AC to raise the temperature when you're away and cool down before you return. Smart thermostats can save 10-23% on heating and cooling.

2. Seal air leaks. Check around windows, doors, and where pipes enter your home. Caulking and weatherstripping are inexpensive fixes that prevent conditioned air from escaping.

3. Use ceiling fans strategically. Fans don't cool rooms — they cool people. Run them counterclockwise in summer to create a wind-chill effect, and turn them off in empty rooms.

4. Close blinds on south and west-facing windows. Solar heat gain through windows is a major source of cooling load. Blackout curtains or reflective window film can make a big difference.

5. Don't neglect maintenance. A well-maintained AC system runs 15-25% more efficiently than a neglected one. Change filters monthly and schedule annual professional tune-ups.

6. Bump up your thermostat. Every degree you raise your thermostat above 72°F saves about 3% on cooling costs. Try 76-78°F when you're home and 82-85°F when you're away.

7. Consider a system upgrade. If your AC is over 10 years old, a new high-efficiency system can pay for itself in energy savings. We offer financing to make it affordable.
